Santiago Andrade León is a Kuraka — an Andean doctor — a medicine man, spiritual guide, artist, photographer, musician, author and guardian of ancestral knowledge.
Born in Ecuador, for more than thirty years he has been a student and practitioner of Sumak Kawsay. His formation as a Kuraka was not a course or a title: it was a path walked alongside the elders, in ceremony, on the mountain and in service to the community.
"In his work the artist cannot be separated from the healer: the work emerges from the same source as the ceremony."
La preservación del saber
The preservation of knowledge
What Santiago has received does not belong to him: he keeps it for those who will come. That is why his work crosses so many forms — painting, music, story, book, ceremony: each is a different vessel for one memory that refuses to go out.
El arte como medicina
Art as medicine
For Santiago, to create and to heal are the same gesture. The painting does not illustrate the ceremony; it prolongs it. The music does not accompany it; it embodies it. Between creativity, ceremony and healing there is no border, only continuity.
